A Winning Design: Western & Southern Open’s Tennis Champs Celebrate with the Rookwood Cup

The legendary Cincinnati tennis tournament ends with the winners proudly holding our Rookwood Cup

It was a week of close calls, upsets, and record-breaking wins at the Western & Southern Open, hosted in Mason, Ohio. With all eyes on the Queen City, the world’s best in tennis competed for the win—and the revered Rookwood Cup, a commemorative trophy with origins dating back to the tournament’s earliest days.

First held in Cincinnati in 1899, the Western & Southern Open is the oldest tennis tournament to be continuously hosted in its founding city. At the time, Rookwood was finishing its second decade of business and was commissioned by Western & Southern to produce custom commemorative gifts for the victors: ceramic ale sets for the men, and stylish Amphora vessels for the women.

In 2010, we renewed our partnership with Western & Southern Financial Group with the introduction of the commemorative Rookwood Cup: an elegant, soaring trophy design that has been given to the likes of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, and this year, champions Madison Keys and Daniil Medvedev. Designed by ceramicist Roy Robinson, carved by Gary Simon, and hand-painted by Deborah Smith, the commemorative cup is adorned with tennis balls nestled within acanthus leaves. At its garnet base, handcrafted emblems of Western & Southern and Rookwood speak to the longstanding partnership of two pioneering Cincinnati businesses.

“Every year, we look forward to creating this one-of-a-kind cup for the Western & Southern Open’s winners,” said Smith. “The trophy takes two and a half days to complete and is a true group effort, involving every department in our factory, so it really embodies the hard work and determination of the tournament. There’s nothing quite like watching the champions hold the Rookwood Cup high in the air.”
